Animal Ag Environmental Sustainability Summit – January 26-27 at IPE
The Animal Agriculture Environmental Sustainability Summit will be held January 26-27, 2010 in Room A-411 of the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta during the International Poultry Expo. On Tuesday afternoon learn the basics, the building blocks of a successful sustainability program as well as hear how John Vrieze, a Wisconsin diary producer, and Tom Clemens of Hatfield Quality Meats developed and communicated their programs. On Wednesday morning Larry Pope, CEO of Smithfield Foods, will keynote a discussion of the importance of corporate sustainability efforts. Also on Wednesday’s program are Christian Richter of The Policy Group and Suzy Friedman of The Environmental Defense Fund giving the Washington and the environmental group perspectives. Plan to attend Machine Guarding workshop at IPE
On January 28, 2010 Paul Schlumper of Georgia Tech Research Institute and Ed Foulke, a partner with Fisher & Phillips LLP and a former Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, will present a workshop on machine guarding and equipment safety. The workshop will focus on hazard identification, avoidance and control and on OSHA’s approach to enforcement. The workshop is geared for plant management, engineering, maintenance and safety personnel. It will be held in Room A-405 of the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from 9-11 AM. If your company is a member of U.S. Poultry & Egg Association or AFIA and is actively producing eggs, poultry meat or feed, you are eligible for a complimentary registration to the International Poultry Expo by completing the online registration (www.ipe10.org) before January 8, 2010.

Cell Phone Driving Laws
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), at any given time, more than ten million drivers in the United States are talking on cell phones. In response to safety concerns some states have banned certain types of cell phone use while driving, such as handheld cell phone use, use of wireless phones by bus drivers, novice or juvenile drivers, or even texting. COBRA Subsidy Eligibility Extended by Two Months
On December 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a provision that extends the eligibility date for the COBRA premium subsidy through February 28, 2010. The extension was authorized by a provision in the 2010 Defense Appropriations Act (Act). The bill now goes to the Senate. Employers subject to state “mini-COBRA” laws will need to monitor developments under applicable state law to see how their state reacts to the changes made by the Act.
