Department of Labor Rolls Out Regulatory Agenda Online
On December 7th, the Department rolled out its regulatory agenda entirely online. All of the information — including more than eight hours of Web chats with Secretary Solis and other DOL officials — can be viewed on the Department’s new regulations Web page. The site also contains links to fact sheets, resources, ways to comment on specific regulations, and video "vignettes" of workers, employers, and DOL officials putting a human face on the proposed regulations. The Federal Register notice of the agenda is 89 pages long and is available at http://www.dol.gov/asp/regs/unifiedagenda/fall_2009_agenda.pdf.

Employers Shun Health Reform Despite Deal
Efforts in the U.S. Senate to move away from a government-run insurance option failed to bring around one major opponent of the bill — big business. Business groups have long opposed efforts to expand access to health insurance for a number of reasons, most of which may only lead businesses to lower wages, lower working hours, reduce hiring and eliminate jobs.

David Michaels Confirmed as OSHA Head
On December 3, the Senate confirmed the nomination of David Michaels to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). His confirmation gives OSHA its first permanent administrator since Edwin Foulke Jr. resigned in November 2008.
