Only 2 Days Left! “Members To Atlanta” Waives Expo Registration Fee-Deadline Is Jan. 8 This Friday! Register Today!

U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and the American Feed Industry Association remind the poultry and feed industries of this year’s unique “Members to Atlanta” (M2A) program that will waive the registration fee at the 2010 International Poultry Expo. The program is available to member firms of both associations engaged in the production of poultry and egg products and feed manufacturing. However, registration must be made on-line by January 8, www.ipe10.org. The 2010 Expo is set for January 27-29 in Atlanta.

Plan to attend Machine Guarding workshop at IPE

On January 28, 2010 Paul Schlumper of Georgia Tech Research Institute and Ed Foulke, a partner with Fisher & Phillips LLP and a former Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, will present a workshop on machine guarding and equipment safety. The workshop will focus on hazard identification, avoidance and control and on OSHA’s approach to enforcement. The workshop is geared for plant management, engineering, maintenance and safety personnel. It will be held in Room A-405 of the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from 9-11 AM. If your company is a member of U.S. Poultry & Egg Association or AFIA and is actively producing eggs, poultry meat or feed, you are eligible for a complimentary registration to the International Poultry Expo by completing the online registration (www.ipe10.org) before January 8, 2010.

Protective Eyeware- Examining Barriers to Use

According to data presented at the 2009 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting, there were 212,000 eye injuries treated in emergency departments across the United States in 2007. The highest rates of injury occurred among younger workers, males, and construction industry workers. Earlier data suggests that work-related eye injuries cost industry more than $300,000,000 per year in lost work time, medical expenses, and workers compensation and account for approximately five percent of all workers compensation claims. Liberty Mutual’s “from Research to Reality” focuses on eye protection in this quarterly issue.

The 2009 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index identifies the top ten causes of disabling injuries which cost industry an estimated $52 billion in 2007.

Donning and Doffing Depends on Collective Bargaining Agreement

The Fourth Circuit recently ruled that compensation for time spent changing clothes depends on the collective bargaining agreement or custom and practice. This important ruling is helpful not only in unionized facilities, but also in the ruling rejecting wage-hour claims for time spend donning, doffing and washing during unpaid meal breaks.

Four Ways to Manage the Risks of Social Media

The social media explosion is taking many businesses by surprise. Some companies edge forward cautiously into viral marketing, finding clever ways to leverage YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and other sharing Websites to their advantage. Others are turning a blind eye to uses that may put their companies at substantial risk. High on the list of concerns should be the potential for employee postings and blogs. While it may be unrealistic to completely ban social media use in the workplace, companies can take successful steps to manage the risk.
